OMG!!!1!one!!eleven!!!!11!

We have a crap-ton of awesome news to relay to you about Hot Club. As many of you heard, we are switching locations, and taking over the Trotter Building on Geer street.

We are also switching nights to the much more workweek/school-week friendly night of Thursday. So here’s the basic rundown for the next Hot Club and then I’ll give you more details about our exciting changes.

What: Hot Club of Durham Swing Dance
When: Thursday, June 3 at 8pm-12am
Where: The Trotter Building (410 West Geer St, Durham NC 27701)
Cost: $7 (includes free beginner lesson)

For this very special Hot Club night, we are going to be having two special guest DJs (TBA, waiting for confirmation), and a super delicious DESSERT POTLUCK!

Bring a home-baked treat to share and get in for the reduced price of $5. Om-nom-nom

The Trotter Building:

We are super excited to be moving to the trotter building. It’s located in the Durham Central Park District, across for Manbitesdog Theater. This neighborhood is booming. It has the Farmer’s Market, the soon to open Fullsteam Brewery, and the soon to reopen Kings Sandwich Shop. Plus, it’s just a short stroll to the city center. The building itself is beautiful and spacious.

The floors are concrete, but don’t fret! We will be working hard to raise enough money to put a wood floor in the space and make it even better to dance in. Also, the floor is polished concrete on rafters. It’s slick enough and has enough give so that’s it’s a perfectly suitable surface to dance on.

So, come out and check out our new digs!

Beginner Lesson (Start’s at 8pm)

Partnered Charleston: This is the granddaddy of all swing dances and is a great, and easy way to get out on the dance floor having fun in no time. Joe Jackson will be teaching you how to party like it’s 1929! This lesson is free with admission to the dance.

DJ Dance (9pm-12an)

Feature DJ(s)- TBA

We are getting awesome DJs for you guys. We’ll let you know as soon as they are confirmed!

We at Hot Club believe very strongly in workshops and exchanges. We urge you to take opportunities to travel and to learn from dance with as many people possible.

We are fortunate enough to have a local workshop happening right here, in Durham, NC. The Triangle Swing Dance Society is organizing the 2nd annual Bull City Stompede, Lindy workshop. The workshop will be held on February 5-7, 2010.

Nina Gilkenson and Andy Reid will be traveling from DC, one of the top swing dance cities in our nation, to teach us a little of their Lindy knowledge. Also, Michael and Jaya Gamble, the organizers of Southern Belle Swing Bash and Lindy Focus, will be gracing us with their awe inspiring expertise as well. On top of these four fabulous instructors, we will have George Knott’s Square Trio play on Friday night and  the Russ Wilson Swingtet on Saturday night.

Prices are incredibly low (Members $80 (student members $70), and non-members $100 (student nonmembers $90)), especially through Sunday, January 10. After Sunday, the price increases $30. The price will increase even more at the door, so register early! Bullcitystompede.org

This is the last Hot Club of the year and we have a couple of very special guests coming in for the holidays. We are excited to have Tonia “the Knife” Davis and Naomi “the soup spoon” Boswell.

Hot Club of Durham
Tuesday 12/22/2009
ERUUF (Eno River Unitarian Universalist Fellowship)
4907 Garret Rd
Durham, NC 27707

Free Beginner Lesson- Charleston at 7pm

Get on the floor fast with this high energy dance from the roaring 20’s. We at Hot Club find that this dance is the easiest and most fun to start with. We are happy to welcome Naomi Boswell back to North Carolina to help us teach this class! Naomi is an experienced dancer who’s been living in the swing dance mecca, Seattle since she left here. She’ll be teaching with Joe Jackson.

DJs- Start at 8pm

Tonia “the Knife” Davis is back again as our feature DJ. As you may or may not know, there is a recently discovered Louis Armstrong song about her. She’s awesome enough that Louis Armstrong saw 60 years into the future and wrote a song about her, so you really don’t want to miss her set. Missing Tonia’s sets has been shown to cause cancer in lab rats.

Nicole “the dizzle” Dienert is our house DJ this week. As usual she is not to be missed. You all know how much she dislikes it when you miss her sets. You don’t want to upset Nicole, believe me.

12/15 Hot Club – Gift Certificates by hotclub
December 11, 2009, 7:19 pm

Hot Club is back to normal this week. There’s no cooking contest, blues themes, or competitions this week. There’s just some good old fashioned swing dancing! I know I can’t wait. We will also be announcing a special treat for the 12/22 dance this week. Be there! It is written.

We also have super-awesome Hot Club gift certificates available. They are great for Christmas presents to current dancers, and soon to be dancers. Give ’em to your friends, enemies, grandmas, or anyone else who might want to cut a rug with us! They are available in all denominations at the door to Hot Club dances and classes and are good for any Hot Club dances or classes!

They are also available online!

Hot Club of Durham Swing Dance
7pm: Beginner Lesson–Balboa
8-11pm: Dancing!

Lesson – Balboa Beginner Lesson- Starts at 7 pm

Taught by the one and only Cliff Dyer

Balboa is another swing era dance that is loosely based on Charleston. It was danced primarily on the West Coast in the late 20’s and 30’s, and gets its signature look from the fact that the ballrooms in California were packed to the gills. This is a great dance to add to your repertoire! This class is suitable for brand new beginners and experienced dancers. Cliff is known for his attention to good technique and connection. With this class you won’t only look good, your dancing will feel good too.

DJs Start at 8pm

DJ TBA – DJ TBA is a dark and mysterious figure. He’s usually replaced by one of our regular DJs prior to the dance, so he’s never actually played a set. Maybe this time he will finally reveal himself.

Joe Jackson – Our house DJ Joe will have you “Steppin’ Out” to some of the best swing music you’ve ever heard. He’ll make you “Beat Crazy,” and you’ll want to dance “One More Time.”

Extra points to anyone who figures out the reference above.

12/8 Hot Club of Durham Dance – Son of Blues

We had such a great turnout to our blues themed Hot Club last month that we thought we would do it again. So now you have yet another opportunity to blues dance while Dance Blues Friday is on hiatus. Kristy will be back with us, but we will be changing up the lesson and house DJ. It will be tons of fun.

Tuesday 12/08/2009
Hot Club of Durham Swing Dance (Directions)
7pm: Lesson–Slow Lindy
8-11pm: Dancing!

Lesson – Slow Lindy – Starts at 7 pm

With those classy cats, Joe & Rebecca

Ever wonder what the heck to do when the tempos slow down? You don’t have to learn a new dance, nor do you have to revert back to the uncomfortable swaying that characterized your middle school slow dances. In fact, you can do the Lindy Hop you know and love at even the slowest tempos. In this class we’ll cover technique to dust off your slow lindy: e.g. control, balance, play, and “milking it”. Whether you’ve been dancing for years or know only some basic lindy hop (either 6 or 8-ct), this class will be appropriate for you.

Still my favorite clip of slow lindy hop…

DJs Start at 8pm

Kristy Milliken – Our featured DJ for the night wowed you last time. She’s an experienced Blues and Swing DJ. She is multi-talented, multi-faceted, multi-tasking and multi-plied. She is guaranteed to keep you on the floor for multi-ple dances!

Rebecca Brightly – Our house DJ has been testing the bluesy waters by teaching and dancing it. Now she’s going to DJ blues for her first time ever. I’m not sure what to expect, but I expect it to be good.

Similar to “East Coast Swing,” Jason Sager and Rebecca Brightly teach a lesson geared to get beginners out dancing immediately without compromising technique. This class is perfect for pure beginners and those who have learned some swing in the past.

DJs Start at 8pm

Rob in JammiesOur featured DJ this week is Rob Moreland, ambassador of inappropriate humor in the local swing dance scene. This week he’s keeping his mouth shut and spinning all the tunes your heart desires. He takes requests, but only if “I had a date like that,” sounds funny after saying the title. Nicole Deinert is backing him up as our house DJ.

Hot Club Unveils Plans for 2012 World Domination by Rebecca Brightly
November 13, 2009, 6:50 pm

DURHAM, NC–In response to recent 2012 disaster porn coming out in theaters, the Hot Club of Durham announced plans today for world domination of lindy hop by the year 2012.

“The Mayans had it slightly wrong. It’s not going to be the end of the world,” said marketing coordinator Joseph Jackson, “Merely the beginning of a new era in which lindy hop is the primary social outlet for all people of all nations.”

In a 215 page document released online, Hot Club describes plans for eventual world takeover. According to this document, the process is divided into three phases. Phase I, Underground Lindy Hop Assimilation by Key Technophiles, has been underway for the past decade and is nearing completion. “We have 90% assimilation by IT professionals in the United States alone, and almost 70% in other key countries around the world,” said Jackson. Phase II, Guerrilla Assault on Internet Media, has been building steadily for the past several years and will reach the tipping point in mid-2011.  According to the document, Phase III, The Spread of Lindy Hop Reality Television, will be all but inevitable after this point, and will ensure the dominance of lindy hop over all other forms of socialization.

“We expect people to be lindy hopping uncontrollably in the streets. At first it will be mass hysteria, but we believe the people will eventually become accustomed to their new need to gyrate to swing-era jazz music,” said Nicole Deinert, lead organizer. “Bars and music venues will be converted to dance havens, and “swingout” will finally be added to the dictionary.”

It is unclear exactly how each of the phases will be accomplished. Much of the 215 page online document was comprised of seemingly unrelated Youtube videos. “Yeah, we started writing about all these big plans, but then it just devolved into the three of us drooling over videos of Skye and Frida for hours on end,” said Rebecca Brightly,  Hot Club’s head lackey. “We also came up with some pretty cool names for reality TV shows. Lindy Hop Boss, Dancing Without the Stars, and Jam Survivor are some of my favorites.” The document includes 23 pages of potential names for lindy hop reality shows.

The White House appeared to have a positive reaction to the news Friday morning. In a public statement, President Obama cryptically said that “2012 could be a very good year.”

“We are most encouraged by his statement of support,” said Deinert.

More plans will be announced later in the month, when Hot Club pulls itself away from Youtube.com long enough to talk about them.
