12/8 Hot Club of Durham Dance – Son of Blues

We had such a great turnout to our blues themed Hot Club last month that we thought we would do it again. So now you have yet another opportunity to blues dance while Dance Blues Friday is on hiatus. Kristy will be back with us, but we will be changing up the lesson and house DJ. It will be tons of fun.

Tuesday 12/08/2009
Hot Club of Durham Swing Dance (Directions)
7pm: Lesson–Slow Lindy
8-11pm: Dancing!

Lesson – Slow Lindy – Starts at 7 pm

With those classy cats, Joe & Rebecca

Ever wonder what the heck to do when the tempos slow down? You don’t have to learn a new dance, nor do you have to revert back to the uncomfortable swaying that characterized your middle school slow dances. In fact, you can do the Lindy Hop you know and love at even the slowest tempos. In this class we’ll cover technique to dust off your slow lindy: e.g. control, balance, play, and “milking it”. Whether you’ve been dancing for years or know only some basic lindy hop (either 6 or 8-ct), this class will be appropriate for you.

Still my favorite clip of slow lindy hop…

DJs Start at 8pm

Kristy Milliken – Our featured DJ for the night wowed you last time. She’s an experienced Blues and Swing DJ. She is multi-talented, multi-faceted, multi-tasking and multi-plied. She is guaranteed to keep you on the floor for multi-ple dances!

Rebecca Brightly – Our house DJ has been testing the bluesy waters by teaching and dancing it. Now she’s going to DJ blues for her first time ever. I’m not sure what to expect, but I expect it to be good.

It’s time for a very special edition of Hot Club of Durham. We’re doing Blues! We know that you guys have been missing Blues while Dance Blues Friday is on hiatus, and we want to keep you guys in practice. Expect a unique experience with some surprises, and a whole mess of fun.

Don’t worry there’ll still be plenty of swing and vintage music too, just think of it as Hot Club with an awesome bluesy twist.

Location
ERUUF (Eno River Unitarian Universalist Fellowship)
4907 Garrett Rd
Durham, NC 27707

Price
$7 (lesson included)

Beginner Lesson (Starts at 7pm)-

20s Style Blues – We have our own take on blues dance based on a Lindy Hop connection foundation. We feel that it’s a great way to get started dancing to slower music, and that it compliments any other blues or swing dance style that you may have learned. This class will be geared toward beginners but many, more experienced, dancers will learn something new here. This class will be taught by Hot Club’s own Joe Jackson and Rebecca Brightly.

Our Lovely Deejays (music goes from 8-11ish)-

Kristy Miliken – Our feature DJ for the night asked for this gig specifically. She’s an experienced Blues and Swing DJ and she’s so good that she’s made grown men weep with joy (don’t ask how I know… I just got something in my eye… it’s nothing). We promise that you will love her just as much as we do.

whos_awesomeNicole Deinert – Our house DJ Nicole is also an experienced Blues and Swing DJ. She’s relatively new to the circuit, but she’s gone from zero to freakin’ awesome in the blink of an eye. She’ll keep you on the floor and saying, “I’ve never danced to a song like that before, but I like it!”

We might do this again in December if we get a good turnout and excitement level. So, come out, have fun, and get the Blues, Hot Club Style!

Hot Club Sings the Blues by hotclub

Believe or not, we blues dance too!  Hot Club of Durham instructors Rebecca Brightly and Joe Jackson will be showing their stuff at this Saturday’s, October 24th, Night of the Living Djs.  Our demo will be at 11:15.  Register now, this thing gets packed.

Joe and Rebecca

Joe and Rebecca are often found wondering why their friends talk about blues as though it’s a different dance than Lindy Hop.  To them good Blues is, or should be, based on the solid connection and body movement of swing dance.  To paraphrase Dawn Hampton, I don’t know why people call this blues dance, it’s just slow dance!

So come out and see our interpretation of this popular dance style.  We think you will see and hear something new.

What does blues dance mean to you?

Would you like to see a blues themed night at Hot Club while Dance Blues Friday is on hiatus?
